Geoffrey Dunn writes in the Huffington Post:
Sarah Palin quit five colleges in her otherwise unremarkable collegiate career, before finally graduating from the sixth. She quit her job in television. She and Todd quit their snow machine dealership in Big Lake. She quit her job as Mayor of Wasilla to run for lieutenant governor. She quit as chair of the Alaska Oil & Gas Conservation Commission. Now she has quit the governorship of the state she supposedly loves. Sarah Palin is a quitter. When the going gets tough, Sarah Palin quits.

A part of me says, "So what?" and "Who cares?"
And if Sarah Palin were Sarah Palin, private citizen, it wouldn't make a hill of beans.
But she's Sarah Palin, politico, aspiring after high national office, including the presidency, and apparently, for a hard-core bunch of right-wing groupies, she's the shine light of the future Republican Party.
Her life and her record: manifestly erratic.
And this is someone who aspires to lead the nation, if not the free world?
Hmmm, I don't think so.

Drill Baby Drill
So long Sarah.
Not likely to disappear entirely - there's still a nut-base out there willing to buy her empty-headed world-view - "I can see the Russians from here" and a religious right-wing that would support Attilia the Hun if he opposed abortion and hated gays.
Oh no, as I sit here, Pat Buchanan is comparing Palin to Nixon - like Nixon, she'll find a couple of good speech writers, nail down some good lines and emerge, then, as the front-runner for 2012. Uh huh. You go Pat.
Palin claims she didn't want to be a lame duck governor. How about just lame duck.
I feel for her. I really do. Her ego has outstripped her ability by light years. She was primed and pumped by good handlers who crafted her lines and gave her an in with the far right. But in the short run, it became tragically apparent to most everyone, even Republican insiders, that here was a person unfit for the office.
It'll be fun to watch. And if not fun, maybe just sad.
Sadder, still, to watch the Republicans continue their much-deserved downward spiral, not that I mind. But our nation is served best when both political parties are healthy, and their respective good health is very much like the biblical observation, steel sharpens steel.
As of this moment, the Republicans are anything but sharp. In fact, downright dull, verging mostly on the edge of buffoonery. Their social agenda against abortion and homosexuality has proved bankrupt. Their extreme economic theories have brought this nation to the brink of depression. All in all, they're a tired and beaten group fumbling around in the dustbins of the past to find themselves, while ignoring the future and dismissing the new normal in which we all now live politically and economically.
What will Sarah do?
Maybe take a break. Grab her rifle, climb into a plane and shoot a few wolves from the air. The loonies in the lower 48 will love her for it.
So long Sarah. It's not been so nice knowing you.

Repubs: Conservative or Fundamentlist?
Real Republicans are conservative!
What masquerades as a Republican Party these days is a religious/political fundamentalism - anything but conservative.

Republicans Commit Social Suicide
I am stunned ... amazed ... flabbergasted ... as the Repubs show their true colors - a petulant ideology willing to let millions of Americans fall into the pit of a depression while still touting their foolish mantra of tax cuts.
TAX CUTS DON'T WORK! They do not create jobs, they depress the economy, deplete government coffers, encourage Wall Street to go for short-term profits and give an artificial sense of well-being.
Do any of the Repubs get that?
Beginning with Reagan, and his silly economic policies - low taxes and borrowing, we lived high-on-the-hog for a long time, but roosters come home to roost, and they're crowing now with a vengeance.
Are the Repubs capable of thought?
Not likely.
They are in the grip of ideology - a mindset that filters the world for them - it's not about people; it's never been about people, but about their skewed principles which are essentially fascist - using the government to feather the nests of the powerful.
The growing power of Wall Street has to be curtailed (we need another Teddy Roosevelt's move against the robber-barrons), and we all need to recover a sense of mutual accountability through taxation.
Our infrastructure is falling apart, and if that isn't a matter of national security, I don't know what is.
As the former Repub governor of Michigan, John Engler) did so well - he lowered taxes and allowed the roads to go to hell, and just about everything else, leaving Jennifer Granholm with a mess essentially unsolvable.
The low-tax mantra is suicide for a great nation well on its way to third-rate status - a debtor nation living off the greed and good will of China, Japan and the Saudis.
The pathetic behavior of America's board rooms, the excess of greed, the "let them eat cake" mentality of the self-appointed "royalty" reveals the moral abyss of American capitalism.
Grounded in the prophetic voice of the Old Testament, John the Baptist and Jesus, the pretensions of Rome and its Jerusalem allies (the temple establishment) are painfully obvious. We have been heading down a dark road for a long time, cheered on by the likes Alan Greenspan (who has rightly admitted the flawed nature of his ideology).
The super-wealthy and their political lapdogs are fascists - let's not pull any punches on this. Fascism is the heart and soul of super-wealth.
Without a clear and convincing moral sense, it's easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than a person of wealth to enter the kingdom of heaven (God's realm on earth - "thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven."
Is there hope?
Who knows?

Hope
The Republican Party is in a state of total collapse.
It's principle literary energy - The National Review - is without moral compass with the loss of the two Buckleys, one by death (Bill) and the other by resignation (Christopher) after his endorsement of Obama.
Palin continues to flap her wings, a parody of herself.
Mike Huckabee has a new book coming out - click here - but it's full of old ideas. Though he tries to move beyond the ideology and orthodoxy of the GOPalin group, preliminary reviews indicate that the GOP is very tired, and very irrelevant to the times.
He proposes a sales tax rather than income tax. Sound simple? I suppose it is, but it's discriminatory toward the poor, because in a sales tax structure, the poor always pay more than the rich - ten dollars out of a hundred is a whole lot more than a hundred out of a thousand, and so on. The biblical observation holds true: of those who have much, much is required.
And Biden was right - it IS patriotic to pay taxes, just like it's right to pay for your groceries. The Reagan lies - that we can have everything we want, without strings, without cost, without taxes - is the greatest lie every told, and the greater story, however, is that so many of us believed it.
The Greedy Old Party - for now, put it to rest and let it alone. Who knows, in another ten days, Palin will have disappeared from the media - let her hunt moose (hope she misses like she did in the campaign - the moose deserve a better life than being a trophy for her raging ego and limited intellect).
It's time for thoughtful and mostly liberal folks to understand that we've won a major victory, crossed a bridge no one knew to exist five years ago, and it's time for a new vision for America - not an ideological vision, but a NEW New Deal fit for the times - a globalized economy, environmental degradation, wars and rumor of wars on a regional scale rather than some post-Depression world war; the need to narrow the gap between the haves and the have-nots, health care, education and a well-regulated Wall Street.
Toward this end, I believe that Obama will bring a depth of thought and creativity - not to mention, civility - with the persona of authentic conviction long needed in the White House.
It will take years - the New Deal required a lot of time, and incurred a number of missteps along the way, but the New Deal rebuilt the nation - though a World War likely contributed mightily to the renewing of the economy.
As for the bailout, we need to put a lot of cash into the public sector - mass transit, bridges, school, playgrounds - to put folks back to work. Even an auto bailout, with plenty of strings, would be far better than paying the bills of Wall Street's greedy stupidity.
We have a chance.
America has a chance.
The world has a chance.
Let's make it work.

What Happened to the Repubiican Party?
The Wall Street Journal has published an excellent piece noting the decline of the conservative intellectual once represented by William Buckley et al. The recent selection of Sarah Palin as a VP candidate and then tauted as a potential leader of the Republican Party reveals the decline of the right into populist anti-intellectual demagoguery.
A thoughtful article full of quotable quotes - check it out HERE.
